Chickadee eggs are white with small reddish-brown spots.

The easiest way to identify a type of bird’s egg is to consult a field guide. I prefer ones with photographs rather than drawings. For me, they’re more realistic and show natural variations. But, in the absence of such a resource, look to these clues and then confirm with a guide.

Snake eggs are a whitish color and have a soft shell that is leathery to the touch. These oblong, Tic Tac-shaped eggs are very delicate and vulnerable to predation and the elements. This is why you will mostly find them underground or buried in moist, protective leaf litter.

Many birds don’t start incubating until the last egg is laid, which is why you might not see the parents for some time. Or maybe you’ve lingered too long and they’re waiting for you to scram. Even spooked birds most likely will return within a day or two.

Starling eggs (Sturnus vulgaris)
Starling eggs are smooth and fairly glossy, 30 x 21mm in size. They are pale blue eggs with no markings. They are sometimes found whole, with unhatched eggs, largely due to infertility. Starlings nest in colonies, with all individuals feeding in a communal foraging ground.

Cowbird eggs are white to grayish-white with brown or gray spots or streaks. Many species’ eggs resemble cowbird eggs, so you may not be able to tell if the nest is parasitized until after the eggs hatch.

Bluebird Eggs are powder blue (no dark spots), sometimes white. It is not common to have feathers in a bluebird nest, but this one had a few. The swoopy nest to the right has a leaf in it which may have been stuck to the mix of pine needles and grass used.
The eggs of mockingbirds have speckles or splotches (these are some spots on the eggshell) of brown color. This brown color is somewhat like a cinnamon brown. The egg of this bird looks quite attractive to everyone as it is very unique. They are so small, which adds to their cuteness.
