The House Finch, the most common and widespread of the three, typically has a red head, breast, and rump, but does not have red coloring on its brown back or wings.

Adults have large red heads and a black-and-white body. Like other woodpeckers forages on tree trunks, but also catches insects in air.
Measurements. Turkey Vultures appear black from a distance but up close are dark brown with a featherless red head and pale bill. While most of their body and forewing are dark, the undersides of the flight feathers (along the trailing edge and wingtips) are paler, giving a two-toned appearance.
If you catch any glimpses of red, then you can be fairly sure you’ve just seen a House Finch. The males of this species have red faces, breasts, and rumps. By contrast, House Sparrow males have gray heads, whitish cheeks, and a black bib under the chin.

Facially, this bird has a large, black mask which goes to the back of the head, as well as some black in front of the bill and a large, red cap which is smaller on the female Acorn Woodpeckers. These birds have long, stout bills that look rather like a spike.
Pileated Woodpeckers are larger than Red-headed Woodpeckers with a red crest and dark back. They also lack the white wing patches seen on the folded wings of Red-headed Woodpeckers.
The green woodpecker is the largest of the three woodpeckers that breed in Britain. It has a heavy-looking body, short tail and a strong, long bill. It is green on its upperparts with a paler belly, bright yellow rump and red on the top of its head.
The red-headed finch (Amadina erythrocephala) (also known as the paradise finch) is a common species of estrildid finch found in Africa. It has an estimated global extent of occurrence of 1,600,000 km2. It is found in Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Red-shouldered hawks have rusty, copper-colored heads and a distinctive white crescent on the tip of each wing. Cooper’s hawks are more difficult to spot because of their stealthy behavior. This species is smaller than other hawk species, often just crow-sized, so they are less obvious than other hawks.
