The blackbird family (Icteridae) includes many species not called blackbirds, such as orioles, meadowlarks, bobolinks and cowbirds. Other birds, such as crows, ravens and starlings, are also primarily black colored, but are in different bird families. Here are five types of blackbirds that you might spot.
Starlings are chunky and blackbird-sized, but with short tails and long, slender beaks. In flight their wings are short and pointed, making them look rather like small, four-pointed stars (and giving them their name).
Common Grackles are larger than Brewer’s Blackbirds with a longer tail and a heavier bill. Male Common Grackles have a bluish sheen on the head, whereas Brewer’s have a purplish sheen.
Continental migrants can sometimes be identified by the fact that they have black beaks. Additionally, some blackbirds that breed in Britain have been known as far as Iberia and Italy.
The European Starling is a medium-sized, black songbird with short, triangular wings, spotted plumage, and a short tail. The adult in breeding plumage has a distinctive thin, pointed, yellow bill and black, speckled plumage with purple-green iridescence. The non-breeding adult has a black beak and light spots.
Ravens are one of the most distinctive birds in North America. In general, they are very large and entirely black just like crows. They can be found across the Northern Hemisphere with common ravens living in areas such as California, Alaska, Canada, Mexico and Scotland.
Correct. Crows, ravens, and blackbirds are all members of the same order, but crows and ravens are in a different family than are blackbirds. To make things more confusing, not all blackbirds are black.
Ravens have bigger, curvier beaks relative to crows. While both species have bristles at the base of the beak, the raven’s are noticeably longer. Its throat feathers are also quite shaggy. Common Ravens are much less common than American Crows in the Eastern United States.
Nonbreeding male Rusty Blackbirds are mottled brown and black unlike the intricate iridescent pattern of European Starlings. They also have a yellow eye whereas starlings have a dark eye.
Starlings are symbolic of communication, of your relationship with your fellow members, and your standing in society. They also symbolize unity; often seen flocking together, these birds have learned that we are always stronger together than alone. Have you been dreaming of starlings frequently these days?

Don’t call them trash birds. Grackles, it turns out, do more than weigh down power lines, steal tortilla chips off your dinner plate and squawk in really loud voices. The gleaming black birds actually play a beneficial role in our society. (Well, besides cleaning up those food crumbs you dropped on the sidewalk.)
Grackles are ground foragers that eat anything from seeds and fruit to invertebrates and fish. Grackles may be attracted to your garden, lawn area or song bird feeders as a food source. Remove feeders to limit this attraction. Remove leftover food on the floor and tables of open-air eateries.
Male blackbirds have bright yellow beaks and eye rings. Females are brown with duller beaks. Young blackbirds are brown and look similar to females.
My understanding is that you can’t say where a individual comes from based only on beak colour. The black beak merely signifies it is a first winter male and it normally changes to yellow between Dec and April, so a black beak doesn’t last too long after the bird gets its first adult plumage.
Some pest birds can be dangerous, and some are also aggressive toward humans. Birds such as ducks, geese, starlings, and the like can pose problems to people. They can transmit diseases, and sometimes have aggressive behavior.
Differences. The most noticeable difference is that European starlings are smaller than American crows. These birds have yellow bills and pink legs, while American crows are all black. Besides, the tails are wedge-shaped, and the bills are smaller.
Common Grackles are blackbirds that look like they’ve been slightly stretched. They’re taller and longer tailed than a typical blackbird, with a longer, more tapered bill and glossy-iridescent bodies. Grackles walk around lawns and fields on their long legs or gather in noisy groups high in trees, typically evergreens.
It is good luck if a blackbird makes a nest on your house. If you see 5 crows, sickness will follow; see 6 crows and death will follow.
Along with the robin I would say they are the friendliest of the garden birds and can become quite tame - although they are also quite fickle in that they can be your ‘best friend’ when they’re particularly hungry but when the sun is shining and there are berries on the bush they do tend to blow a little cool.
Blackbird-The blackbird symbolizes temptation and sin and is even attributed to the devil’s workings. The blackbird signifies darkness and evil. In the Bible the blackbird is sent by Satan himself to tempt humans with worldly desires.
“To many, ravens symbolize death or bad fortune to come, but to others they symbolize rebirth and starting anew, serving as a positive sign,” says Dr. Kim. In Norse, Celtic, and Druid mythology, crows and ravens are widely viewed as beacons of intelligence.
In some parts of the world, the raven is a sign of death or misfortune; to others its presence indicates good fortune.
