Ravens are one of the most distinctive birds in North America. In general, they are very large and entirely black just like crows. They can be found across the Northern Hemisphere with common ravens living in areas such as California, Alaska, Canada, Mexico and Scotland.
Blackbird Symbolism and Meaning
The spirit of the Blackbird may either be a welcoming sign or one which brings bad news. These dark birds signify mystery and magic, and are thought to represent the Otherworlds (Borrington).
The blackbirds congregate for food and protection. While some birds migrate alone, blackbirds find strength in numbers. They cooperate to find food — whether in a field, backyard or parking lot — and keep an eye out for predators.
Common Grackles are blackbirds that look like they’ve been slightly stretched. They’re taller and longer tailed than a typical blackbird, with a longer, more tapered bill and glossy-iridescent bodies. Grackles walk around lawns and fields on their long legs or gather in noisy groups high in trees, typically evergreens.
Crows, ravens, and blackbirds are all members of the same order, but crows and ravens are in a different family than are blackbirds. To make things more confusing, not all blackbirds are black.
Crows and ravens are large black birds found throughout North America, and they can be hard to tell apart. The best clue for identification is usually the voice, but the species differ in some other subtle ways, too.
Common Grackles are larger than Brewer’s Blackbirds with a longer tail and a heavier bill. Male Common Grackles have a bluish sheen on the head, whereas Brewer’s have a purplish sheen.
Along with the robin I would say they are the friendliest of the garden birds and can become quite tame - although they are also quite fickle in that they can be your ‘best friend’ when they’re particularly hungry but when the sun is shining and there are berries on the bush they do tend to blow a little cool.
Economic impacts. The Common Blackbird can be a pest in orchards, parks and gardens, being rather destructive of ground vegetation, particularly backyard vegetable patches.
Nonbreeding male Rusty Blackbirds are mottled brown and black unlike the intricate iridescent pattern of European Starlings. They also have a yellow eye whereas starlings have a dark eye.
Crow look-alike birds are common ravens, red-winged blackbirds, common grackles, brown-headed cowbirds, western jackdaws, pied currawongs, western rooks, black-billed magpies, alpine choughs, European starlings, and more.
“To many, ravens symbolize death or bad fortune to come, but to others they symbolize rebirth and starting anew, serving as a positive sign,” says Dr. Kim. In Norse, Celtic, and Druid mythology, crows and ravens are widely viewed as beacons of intelligence.
Ravens are the biggest of the three species. All are glossy black, though crows give off a violet hue and Rusty Blackbirds reflect blue-green to green. All three species have different shapes in their wings, bills, and tails.
Birds have been extensively featured as signs of good luck because they are typically considered emblems of love and peace - two things everybody wants in abundance. Therefore, birds like robins, woodpeckers, owls, ducks, and magpies are seen as symbols of good luck.
The belief of blackbirds’ spiritual connection with the otherworld in many cultures also establishes them as death messengers. In Celtic cultures, a bird in the house portend a death in the family. In Irish cultures, wild birds roaming inside or above your house signal a death or illness in the women of the family.
Flocking could be in part a response to food availability and procurement. Blackbirds excel at communication. Their ability to share information might be the avian version of crowdsourcing. Maybe on balance it’s beneficial to have access to multiple sources of food, even if it means sharing that bounty with others.
Black crows symbolize prophecy, transformation, change, and freedom. Black crows have quite strong symbolic and spiritual meanings attached to them from all sorts of different places, religions, and cultures. You can find them in many folk tales, movies, religious texts, and more.
What does it mean when a crow visits you? Crows appear to alert you to the presence of spiritual shifts taking place around you and to remind you to pay close attention to the spiritual signs that are being conveyed to guide you in the right direction.
Are Grackles Corvids? Though they are each large dark colored birds, grackles are not related to crows. Grackles are in the Icteridae, or blackbird family, which includes orioles and cowbirds. Crows are corvids, more closely related to jays and magpies.
Measurements. Males are glossy black all over with a staring yellow eye and a blue sheen on the head grading to greenish iridescence on the body. Females are plainer brown, darkest on the wings and tail, with a dark eye. Immature birds look like washed out, lighter-brown versions of the females.
Crows have a subtle iridescent sheen to their feathers, whereas most grackle species have iridescence that borders on dazzling blue. Female grackles aren’t quite as flashy as the males. In most species, female grackles sport dull brown plumage. Conversely, both male and female crows have the same black-colored plumage.
It is good luck if a blackbird makes a nest on your house. If you see 5 crows, sickness will follow; see 6 crows and death will follow. To avoid bad luck tip your hat if you see a magpie. Whatever you do to a robin will happen to you, so be nice!
