The Northern Goshawk is a robust bird, with sizes reaching between 20–26” and a wingspan of 40.5–46.1”. Its distinguishing feature is a white stripe above its eyes and a black swath starting at the distal end of each one. It is primarily dark gray on its back, with a white mottled chest.
Black-billed Magpie. A staple of the American West, this large bird is hard to miss with its black head and back, white breast, long tail, and iridescent feathers.

In flight note short, white tail with dark band near the tip and broad wings that are pointed at the tips. Light morph birds have dark primaries, white inner wing linings, and a white belly.
Adults are steely blue-gray above with warm reddish bars on the underparts and thick dark bands on the tail. Juveniles are brown above and crisply streaked with brown on the upper breast, giving them a somewhat hooded look compared with young Sharp-shinned Hawks’ more diffuse streaking.
Measurements. Turkey Vultures appear black from a distance but up close are dark brown with a featherless red head and pale bill. While most of their body and forewing are dark, the undersides of the flight feathers (along the trailing edge and wingtips) are paler, giving a two-toned appearance.
This is a characteristic of many seabirds such as Puffins and Razorbills. Underwater predators including some species of shark frequently prey on seabirds but can have problems discerning them against the sky.
The Carolina Chickadee is a small passerine bird in the tit family, it has a white chest and belly, white with orange brown on the flanks; gray back., has a short black bill, short wings and long tail.
Ospreys are brown above and white below, and overall they are whiter than most raptors. From below, the wings are mostly white with a prominent dark patch at the wrists. The head is white with a broad brown stripe through the eye. Juveniles have white spots on the back and buffy shading on the breast.

The density of the patch can vary and could be confused with the rough-legged hawk, but osprey’s wings are generally darker than the hawk’s overall. Secondary Feathers: Ospreys have strong barring on their secondary feathers that make those feathers look darker compared to the paler inner wing.
Description. The three currawong species are sombre-plumaged dark grey or black birds with large bills. They resemble crows and ravens, although are slimmer in build with longer tails, booted tarsi and white pages on their wings and tails. Their flight is undulating.

White-collared blackbirdThe white-collared blackbird (Turdus albocinctus) is a species of bird in the family Turdidae.
Adult goshawks are dark slate gray above with pale gray barred underparts. They have a dark head with a wide white stripe over the eye; the eye is orange to red. Immatures are brown and streaky, with narrow dark bands in the tail. They have an indistinct pale eyebrow stripe and yellow eyes.
American Kestrels are pale when seen from below and warm, rusty brown spotted with black above, with a black band near the tip of the tail. Males have slate-blue wings; females’ wings are reddish brown.
It is covered with bare, red skin. The head of the buzzard is disproportionately small in comparison to its body. The feet and the legs are orange, and the hooked bill is dull yellow.
They’re nature’s cleaning crews, says Wahrung, the creatures willing to dig in and rid the ground of carcasses that can otherwise spread diseases, parasites and bacteria. The ones you may see most often from your house or apartment window are either the black or turkey vultures, depending on where you live.
It is said that it can be a powerful sign of rebirth as well. You might see vultures on the roof and ask yourself, “why are vultures hanging around my house”? The vultures on the roof of the house meaning is of death coming into your household. But don’t get scared right away, for it might also be a symbol of healing.
Adults are black with striking white patches under the wings. The naked head and neck are yellowish orange. Immatures have dark heads, grayer necks, and mottled grayish instead of clear white patches under the wings. Adult coloration is reached at 6-8 years of age.
Juncos are small, dark gray birds with white bellies. Juncos look different in different regions of the United States. In the East, Juncos are dark gray with white underparts and white outer tail feathers.
Measurements. Juncos vary across the country (see Regional Differences), but in general they’re dark gray or brown birds brightened up by a pink bill and white outer tail feathers that periodically flash open, particularly in flight. Dark-eyed Juncos are birds of the ground.
Male Brown-headed Cowbirds have glossy black plumage and a rich brown head that often looks black in poor lighting or at distance. Female Brown-headed Cowbirds are plain brown birds, lightest on the head and underparts, with fine streaking on the belly and a dark eye.
Their black beaks curve down. Their tails and rounded wings bear obvious white patches. These white marks provided striking displays in the birds’ flight and mating rituals. Males average slightly larger than females, from between 22 to 25.5 centimeters long and 51 grams in weight.
